Water

To our readers

Ensuring environmental sustainability is a goal – Goal 7 – of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and Muriella’s Corner is committed to support its implementation, in partnership with all who intend to help more than one billion people release their creative energies, to help free them from the shackles of a life of continuing and overwhelming poverty.

Some of you might have noticed that water has been a recurring topic* on Muriella’s Corner and blogs. This seeming bias is due to almost three decades of work in the United Nations in the area of environment, water and sanitation.

Tips for Travelers to the Tropics

Most of my work took me to developing countries over short and long periods, working with communities, governments and not-for-profit agencies in the drilling of wells, installation of handpumps, building of latrines.

The theme of water vibrates around the globe. In most developing countries, water quantity and water quality are main hurdles for the people. In others, water quality is the main challenge.

I have seen, first hand, the pain and suffering diseases cause to families who ingest and bathe in water populated by parasites – diseases like dracunculiasis (guinea worm), schisostomiasis, bilharziasis, and all the -isises- you can think of.

People’s lives are very affected, too ill to work, not enough time to go to school as fetching water is one of the main duties, especially of girls, and so on.

But they are forced to drink what is available, even though the source is questionable.

They have no CHOICE.

On the other hand, in the developed countries, there is no lack of water. In the quest to make the water potable, many chemicals are added. One of the most insidious is chlorine.

But, since exotic diseases are not present in the water supply, people are hardly concerned about the chemicals and as such continue to drink, shower and bathe in chlorinated water (swimming pools reek of chlorine).

Some are buying bottled water, but here again, hardly any attention is given to health issues – e.g. the water source from which the water is bottled is questionable; the plastic containers are questionable, pollution issues, the financial costs of buying a bottle of water – not enough to drink per day; no attention given to the water used for showering, bathing, cooking, etc., etc.

What is to be done?

The most important thing, we believe, is for people to know that they have a choice. Information propelled them to be users of bottled water, to choose to drink bottled water instead of tap water. But if their grasp of what propelled them is understood overall, they would also be concerned about the water used for showering, bathing, cooking.

We have prepared a comprehensive newsletter on Water with the following headings:

The Water Cure
Different types of water
Bottled Water – clear choices
Brands of Bottled Water; Filtration systems
Chlorine and cancer?
Chlorine and Asthma?
Testimony on drinking water
Discussion H2O

Given the amount of information this entails, we have decided to send it to you in short sips, so that you can click through and read the article you prefer. We recommend however that you read all of them as they will be of use to you as you make your choices.

We have also developed podcasts on water and can make them available upon request.

We will continue the focus on drinking water (quality and quantity), given the focus on this issues as Goal 7 of the Millennium Development Goals

-Reducing poverty and achieving sustained development must be done in conjunction with a healthy planet. The Millennium Goals recognize that environmental sustainability is part of global economic and social well-being. Unfortunately exploitation of natural resources such as forests, land, water, and fisheries-often by the powerful few-have caused alarming changes in our natural world in recent decades, often harming the most vulnerable people in the world who depend on natural resources for their livelihood.

Goal 7 of the Millennium Development Goals sets out by the year 2015 to:

  • Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources.
  • Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water.
  • Achieve significant improvement in lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers, by 2020. (Source: millenniumcampaign.org)

bottled water vs tap water invasion of the plastics

Make your own bottled water – get a filter and save the planet from the invasion of the plastics!

We have been following this trend – read make your own bottled water and save the planet  and bottled vs tap water

Why are people continuing to spend billions of dollars on bottled water? Why are people mindlessly engaging in pollution of the planet, billions of plastic bottles each year?

Again the headlines scream –

Bottled water: A river of money

Clean water comes out of the tap for next to nothing, yet Americans spend more on bottled water than on movie tickets or iPods — a stunning $15 billion last year. Here’s a look at a booming industry’s economics and psychology.

We Americans pitch 38 billion water bottles a year into landfills — in excess of $1 billion worth of plastic. And 24% of the bottled water we buy is tap water repackaged by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.

The Secret to the Game of Life

The Secret to the Game of Life  – Play it

Ask anyone about life and you would be told – Life is…..(a bag of cherries, difficult, what you make it, the pits…) and on, and on.

The adjectives used to describe life change according to the speaker. For those who “Think Positively”, life would be positive things to them. For those who “Think Negatively”, life would be problems to them. For those who “do not stop to think, or do not think at all”, life is “whatever”!

However, we can fit into any of the above categories at any time and not even recognize it. At one moment we think positively, especially when we are reminded that we should; but a second later we could see clearly why things cannot and will not work, why nothing is possible…

By now, however, unless we are living under a rock, we know that Life IS – that Life is really a Game and the best player wins.  Winning could be both positive and negative – but who are we to judge.  For most of us, life is – whatever. Many speak of positive and negative people as though they are outside of us, but look in the mirror and see Ms Positive or Mr Negative – visible after blinks.

I would like to share with you a book that I have had since 1980 called “Your Word is Your Wand”, by Florence Scovel Shinn. I then progressed to the “Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn”, which contains 4 of her complete books, including the Game of Life.

Florence Scovel Shinn was widely known for many years as an artist and illustrator, metaphysician and lecturer, and as having helped thousands of people through her great work of healing and assisting in solving their problems.

I followed her teachings (usually in the natural, as at that time I did not develop my spiritual muscles at all). I would mouth the Affirmations, but not really connect them with spirit. Seeking spirituality has really benefited my image (positive/negative) a great deal and has also led me to many other masters and orientations.

Not until a dramatic event enveloped me in 2000, did those teachings begin to kick in. I became painfully aware of the importance of the metaphysical in our daily lives. According to the metaphysicians, there are three departments of the mind (p4, Wisdom):

  • the subconscious – whatever we feel deeply or image clearly (visualize), is impressed upon the subconscious mind, and carried out in minutest detail;
  • the conscious mind – the carnal or mortal mind is the human mind that sees life as it appears to be. It sees death, disaster, sickness, poverty and limitation of every kind, and it impresses the subconscious;
  • the superconscious mind – the God mind, within each man and is the realm of perfect ideas – the perfect pattern, the Divine Design, for there is a Divine Design for each person. Sometimes we get flashes which seem as unattainable, too good to be true. This is where true destiny resides, and each of us has our own true destiny.

I was operating (and still do from time to time) at the first two levels – deeply feeling, visualizing, being overwhelmed by what is going on around me and in the world, only seeing lack and limitation, etc. Any flash from the superconscious would be a temporary set of excited actions, and back again to conscious and subconscious mind sets.

We all know, as behavioural experts, that knowledge does not directly lead to action, unless one can move to superconsious at a rapid pace and allow life to manifest as it should with overwhelming love, abundance, peace, health, happiness…

The Game of Life is a game of work, a game where we have to be in an awake state and operate with all three engines firing.

Not all people to agree with the above, but unless there is a working alternative, feel free to blog in and blog on.

Why this information?

A discussion with a friend sometime ago revealed that she was very concerned with the state of non-health as she saw it of one of her very good friends; it centered around not being able to let go. I shared that at times, not letting go could also show up in our lives as disease. A passage (p65 Wisdom) clarifies that a health issue, a dis-ease, is believed to  be caused by congesting, storing away too many things; congestion of things causes congestion in the body. When the law of use is violated, the body pays the penalty.

We should consider no longer being on automatic as we proceed in life, but by being conscious of every thought, word, action  – being in the moment, being conscious, helps us to appreciate now…as we operate fully being present to why we are thinking what we are thinking, why we are saying what we are saying, why we are doing what we are doing…

JVs and the MDGs

Joint Ventures (JVs) and the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs)

The cooperation of two or more individuals or businesses–each agreeing to share profit, loss and control–in a specific enterprise.

Investopedia Says: This is a good way for companies to partner without having to merge. JVs are typically taxed as a partnership.

Millenium Development Goals (MDGs)

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest.

The United Nations says that a global partnership for development is necessary for sustainable development.

Joint ventures and partnerships underscore the fact that we all need each other to grow, develop and sustain growth.  Joint ventures are becoming increasingly popular in the internet community and I have subscribed to a few.  They help foster networking, relationships and ultimately positively affect your bottomline.

Zig Ziglar said, “You can get anything you want out of life, if you help enough other people to get what they want.” That’s exactly what Joint Ventures is all about – working together to achieve common goals.

The Secretary-General of the UN said : “We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals – worldwide and in most, or even all, individual countries – but only if we break with business as usual… Success will require sustained action across the entire decade between now and the deadline. It takes time to train the teachers, nurses and engineers; to build the roads, schools and hospitals; to grow the small and large businesses able to create the jobs and income needed. So we must start now… Nothing less will help to achieve the Goals.”

We are all working together to help each other but somehow we do not necessarily make the link to others across the globe.

The first goal of the MDGs is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger  and goal 8 is to develop a global partnership for development.

The joint venture strategy can accomplish that without a doubt, but we have to begin thinking outside the parameters of “me” and extend the parameters to “us” as called for in forging global partnerships.

It is so obviously possible that there must be reasons why sustainable global partnerships have not been done before on a large scale – issues like distrust and dishonesty, inequitable application of laws and tariffs, large outputs of funds and lack of accountability, lack of information, cultural issues regarding language and customs…etc., or if they have worked their information is not circulated widely.

Or, perhaps visualizing the joint venture as a strategy for developing global partnerships has not yet been thought through to look at how  small businesses can help small business around the world, especially at micro and meso levels…At the micro level,  not for profit organizations are helping in the area of microfinance, with excellent results.

But there is a wide gap from micro to meso, with meso having a lot of gray areas yet to be identified and understood.

Using the joint venture strategy as a strategy to achieve goal 8 of the MDGs is possible. The possibility is there, and the time has come. If the will is there, it can be done.  We however would need to cleary define and develop the “it”. Saving the planet depends on all 6 billion plus people working together and supporting each other. In addition to undertaking green practices and behaviors, working together also means helping each other grow and thrive economically.

Celebrities are also ordinary women dealing with breast cancer

Read here for updated information

Most recently, the wife of a presidential candidate – Ms Edwards, spoke out about her journey as regards breast cancer. And we have had other celebrities invited to the media and talk shows to speak out about their experiences.

As usual, the world took note, because of the “celebrity” status of the person dealing with the crisis.

Breast cancer knows no social boundaries, the disease can affect anyone at any age, from teenage to adulthood and beyond.

Some prominent women whose lives that have been touched by breast cancer include: Anastasia, singer ; Jill Eikenberry actress ; Ann Jillian, Actress; Peggy Fleming  figure skater; Kate Jackson  (Charlies Angels); Olivia Newton-John  actress singer; Patti LaBelle,  singer; Diahann Carroll,  Actress/singer; Rue McClanahan, Hollywood actress, Rue is best known for her portrayal of Blanche on the hit sitcom “The Golden Girls;” Shirley Temple Black  Actress/singer; Betty Ford, Former First Lady; Nancy Reagan  former first lady; Melissa Etheridge  singer; Lynn Redgrave,  actress; Edie Falco Sopranos star, Tami Agassi, sister to tennis star Andre Agassi, Suzanne Somers actress (source:http://http://understandingbreastcancer.blogspot.com/2007/01/breast-cancer-cure-with-power-of-fame.html)

This is a disease that has plagued women for centuries. The mother of Louis XIV of France died of breast cancer in 1666. These high rates of breast cancer are not acceptable to the women of the world and must be met with scientific research that provides results. Yet the world seems fascinated with the famous women and celebrities and their management of the dis-ease.

Woman-in-the-street celebrities are also grappling with the seriousness of such a diagnosis and the challenges with navigating the roadblocks along the path to healing, but hardly any one knows of their stories – the housewife, the secretary, the nurse, the plumber, the electrician, the teacher, the university professor, the student, the bus driver, the cook, the mother, the aunt, etc…all of these have stories of bravery and courage which should be told.

Muriella’s Corner would like to hear from all these women,  since she, as editor, has been on the same journey as Ms Edwards, after a diagnosis in 2000.  I am one of the women-in-the-street celebrities and my journey on the road to healing approximates that of some celebrities and many courageous women (lumpectomy, a radical change in diet and thought processes, deep work at the cellular level where change and transformation occur…faith and trust in a team of medical specialists alternative healers and the divine healer, as well as a solid social support system, and so far, so good…).

It is as a result of breast cancer that Muriella’s Corner was created.  Life is ever more meaningful as gratitude, compassion, generosity of spirit have now become daily affirmations and experiences.

Muriella’s Corner – where ideas, issues and solutions meet online – is a weekly newsletter, shared freely with our readers and supporters.

Muriella’s Corner would like to hear about your stories, as we all have earned celebrity status in the way we navigate the pathways to healing, we have earned the right to share with others where we are along the journey and the hurdles we have overcome, or are still overcoming, or do not yet know of…

Email us at customerservice@clik-n-shoppe.com to be added to our database for the newsletter, or leave a comment below.  Muriella’s Corner will arrange to have a webinar or to send your stories  to CNN, MSNBC, Larry King, Oprah, Ellen, Nightline, the Daily Show, et al… for the world to know that many brave women too have also earned celebrity status in dealing with this disease.

As the saying goes, character is formed not by how we  face up to and go through a challenge, but how we are molded and transformed as we come out of the fire. And believe me, any diagnosis of ill-ease and dis-ease can be destabilizing, but a diagnosis of cancer is extremely chilling. The lights seem to go out, everything becomes dark, the mind is on overdrive with thoughts of how, why, why me…

Looking back, I can proudly and safely say, I have benefited extremely from the experience, and am becoming a better person on this side of it.

P.S.:

Women are diagnosed with cancer every day. Their reaction varies depending on many things – and outcomes vary depending on many things.

Moreover, many women do not want to concern themselves much about their health as they are afraid of dealing with the consequences, thus they can be afflicted with cancer or other dreaded diseases and not want to know about it. And many of them are managing despite the odds.

We need to know what else is being done at the individual level to deal with this disease,  what is underground, what else women around the world are doing along the way to healing.

For example- how many use prayer and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine–that is, medicine as practiced by holders of M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degrees and their allied health professionals, such as physical therapists, psychologists, and registered nurses? How many use traditional medical services?  How many use both? How many use neither of those above? What do you use? What do you do?

Share your journey with Muriella’s Corner.  We admire your courage and you have earned the right to be a celebrity dealing with breast cancer.
