End the violence against women and girls. That was the message from the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the UN launched its major global campaign against violence on women on Monday.
The campaign sent men around the world a strong message to end the violence against women.
At least one third of the world’s females are victims of gender-based abuse at least once in their lifetime, Ban noted. He said he will create a global network of male role models in all walks of life who can influence men and boys to speak out against the problem.
Violence against women impedes economic and social growth, and thus the new campaign will run until 2015, the same target year as the internationally agreed aims known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
